Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have any questions about cleverinvest? Here are the answers to some frequently asked questions. If the answer to your question is not among them, please do not hesitate to ask us in person.

General

  • How does cleverinvest work?

cleverinvest allows you to continuously build up your assets in an easy, cost-effective and uncomplicated way – all online.

You do not have to worry about how the financial markets are performing and can still benefit from high returns. You do not need to be wealthy to start building up your assets: cleverinvest is available with a starting balance of as little as CHF 1,000 (or EUR 1,000).

When opening a cleverinvest portfolio, you will receive straightforward support in setting the investment strategy and a recommendation as to which equity weighting suits you.

You yourself decide how high the equity weighting should be. Weightings of 20%, 45%, 70% and 95% are available. It is also possible to invest in gold or real estate. In addition, there is a fixed 5% liquidity weighting. The rest is invested in Swiss or European bonds (reference currency is EUR).

Within the equity weighting, you select themes that best suit your interests. Your capital is then invested automatically on the basis of the selection made. There is nothing else you need to do.

In order to benefit from more favourable average prices, the best thing to do is to set up a standing order in CIC eLounge. This is because making payments at regular intervals over a longer period – irrespective of the market situation – removes the hassle of trying to find the ideal time to invest, i.e. to find the most favourable price. In the end, you have a favourable average price for all investments and are helping to continuously build up your assets in the best possible way.

  • What are the risks of using cleverinvest?

Your wealth with cleverinvest is invested in a broadly diversified fund within the chosen themes. As a result, your capital is better protected against market fluctuations and the performance is broad-based.

Further details can be found under "risk disclosure cleverinvest".

Opening

  • Is there a minimum investment amount to benefit from cleverinvest?

One-off initial investment from CHF 1,000 (or EUR 1,000). Follow-up payments from CHF 50 (or EUR 50). With a standing order, smaller follow-up payments can also be made. These are invested as soon as CHF 50 (or EUR 50) has been reached. The minimum amount may be higher, depending on the themes selected.

  • I already have a custody account with Bank CIC (Switzerland) Ltd. Can I still benefit from cleverinvest?

Yes. You can open one or more cleverinvest portfolios in CIC eLounge.

  • I have a cleverinvest portfolio in CHF. Can I open a second one in EUR?

Yes. You can open a number of cleverinvest portfolios with different currencies and strategies.

Strategy/Investment themes

  • What themes can I invest in?

The themes can be viewed in detail here.

  • What is an ETF?

ETF stands for exchange traded fund. ETFs are managed passively. In contrast to actively managed funds, there is no active selection of investments by the fund. Instead, ETFs track an existing yardstick (benchmark) such as an index, without further analysing the weighting and investment motives. The main advantage is in the fee structure; costs are low because there is no active fund management. ETFs are also highly transparent (because they are traded on the stock exchange every day) and highly diversified (because they offer access to an entire market).

  • What is an index fund?

Like ETFs, index funds aim to track an index as accurately and cheaply as possible, and are also passively managed. The main difference between the two is the exchange listing. Unlike ETFs, index funds are not traded on an exchange. The price (net asset value, NAV) of each unit reflects all the investments of the index fund and is calculated by the fund company on a daily basis. Index funds can be traded in fractions, but ETFs can only be bought and sold in whole shares.

Both ETFs and index funds can invest in separate asset classes such as equities, bonds, real estate and commodities.

  • The proposed equity weighting does not meet my expectations based on the answers I gave in the investor profile. Can I change the equity weighting?

Yes. You can select the equity weighting yourself. Based on the answers you give, we calculate the equity weighting that best fits your risk profile. However, you yourself decide how high your equity weighting is to be for the investments.

  • What investment strategies are available to choose from?

Investors decide the equity weighting for themselves. Weightings of 20%, 45%, 70% and 9 % are available. It is also possible to invest in gold or real estate. In addition, there is a 5% liquidity weighting. The rest is invested in Swiss bonds (or European bonds if the reference currency is EUR).

  • Can I adjust the equity weighting?

Yes. You can adjust the equity weighting in your cleverinvest portfolio yourself in CIC eLounge at any time. However, please note that investment themes that have already been selected will be lost in doing so and will need to be selected again.

  • Do I absolutely have to select investment themes?

Selecting investment themes is not obligatory. You are free to select investment themes, giving your portfolio a focus. If you do not select any specific investment theme, the equity weighting is automatically invested in a Swiss or a European equity fund (reference currency EUR) which reflects the economy and corporate performance in Switzerland or Europe. If the reference currency is EUR, then EUR ETFs/index funds will be selected. Where this is not possible, CHF ETFs/index funds will be used.

  • How many investment themes can I choose?

That depends on the equity weighting of your portfolio that was selected. Investment themes can be added or removed in increments of 5%. With an equity weighting of 45%, you can select up to nine different themes.

  • How can I adjust my defined investment strategy?

You can easily adjust your equity weighting or selection of themes at any time in CIC eLounge.

  • Who defines the investment opportunities in cleverinvest?

Bank CIC’s investment experts look for themes which illustrate trends in societal, market and macroeconomic developments and offer the prospect of high growth potential and return opportunities in the medium to long term. They then select the best funds that fully capture the relevant theme and offer the best value for money.

  • Do I need to select the investment securities in my portfolio myself?

You do not need to worry about selecting individual securities. You simply select the theme in which you would like to invest. Your capital is then invested in the broadly diversified fund associated with this theme. Our investment experts select funds which offer the best value for money.

  • Can I buy other investment securities in my cleverinvest portfolio?

The cleverinvest portfolio is geared exclusively towards the fund selected for each theme. This ensures that your chosen equity weighting is adhered to and your chosen strategy is implemented consistently. If you would like to buy additional investment securities, you can easily open a self-managed custody account (execution-only) in CIC eLounge and buy your desired securities directly by going to “Services > Product opening”.

  • Do the investment funds take account of sustainability aspects?

Depending on the investment theme, the underlying investment funds meet ESG criteria. The special risks in connection with sustainability (ESG risks) can be found in the brochure "Risks involved in trading financial instruments".

Rebalancing

  • How do you ensure that the strategy I defined is implemented?

A check is carried out at the end of every month as to whether the strategy is being implemented in accordance with your definition. If, owing to major market fluctuations, the ranges are exceeded, rebalancing occurs automatically. This ensures that your chosen strategy is implemented consistently.

  • When will an adjustment in the equity weighting or my chosen investment themes be taken into account?

Changes in the strategy or investment themes trigger a restructuring of the securities overnight (changes can be made until the evening). Orders are executed on the next trading day.

  • Why have transactions been executed even though I have not changed my strategy?

The portfolio is restructured automatically depending on market changes and the value of the funds. If the value of a fund increases, so does its relative share in the portfolio. In order to restore the balance and conform to your chosen strategy, the system will automatically execute the relevant transactions.

  • Why is it that my portfolio has not been restructured, even though the equity weighting has changed or I have transferred money (in or out)?

Funds cannot be traded in fractions; a minimum amount has to be reached. This amount may differ, depending on the themes selected. As soon as the minimum amount is reached, the relevant investment is made.

  • How can I make regular payments without becoming active myself?

By setting up a standing order with regular payments into your cleverinvest account, your savings are constantly invested automatically in order to continually build up your assets. Investing with very small amounts is no problem. Once CHF/EUR 50 has been reached, the cumulative amount is invested automatically. The standing order means you don’t have to do anything.

Another advantage: you also have an opportunity to benefit from more favourable average prices. This is because making payments at regular intervals over a longer period – irrespective of the market situation – removes the hassle of trying to find the ideal time to invest, i.e. to find the most favourable price. In the end, you have a favourable average price for all investments and are helping to continuously build up your assets in the best possible way.

  • How will the payment plan benefit me?

It makes sense to set up a payment plan if you would like to withdraw some capital periodically, for example to help to pay university tuition fees for your children or godchildren.

  • What if I do suddenly not want to have all my capital invested for a while?

If you would like to keep your capital in cash because of market developments, simply select “Sell all” in CIC eLounge.

The balance will not be reinvested until you give the order in CIC eLounge by selecting “Invest”.

  • I need cash. Can I withdraw money from the cleverinvest portfolio?

If you need some or all of your savings at short notice, making transfers at any time is no problem – without any rules on withdrawals. The payment order must be issued three working days in advance.

  • Can I pay my bills out of the cleverinvest portfolio?

cleverinvest is an attractive alternative to a savings account and helps you to continuously build up your assets with a medium to long-term investment horizon.

For this reason, cleverinvest is not suitable for payment transactions. One payment from the account per month is free of charge. We recommend using a personal account if you need cash to pay bills. You can do this easily in CIC eLounge by going to “Services > Product opening”. Payment transactions within Switzerland are free of charge. Further information on payment transactions can be found here.

  • How do I go about withdrawing all my capital?

You can give the order to “Sell all” in your cleverinvest portfolio in CIC eLounge. If you do decide to sell, all investments will be sold on the next trading day and the proceeds will be credited to your cleverinvest account. You can then arrange a transfer accordingly.
